Is Artificial Intelligence a Weapon of War?

Artificial Intelligence, the strife to make machines intelligent and the art of giving them the power of decision-making, is supposedly set to get some real traction and application this year. While the adoption of the technology has been vast, most of the enterprises are in their infancy with the real application of the technology.

About 57 percent of companies globally use chatbots that are AI-powered. The AI market is projected to grow to $36.8 billion by 2025. about 72 percent business leaders around the world believe that AI is going to be fundamental in the future and will work as a "business advantage".

While artificial intelligence and Big data analytics would affect all major industries around the world for good, there have been speculations about the limits that must be put on the technology for the security of the human generation.

In mid-2017, two of the most influential technology leaders, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk had entered into a public squabble over their knowledge of the field. While Elon Musk held a gathering of US governors to reveal to them the potential dangers of Artificial Intelligence and demanded regulations in the field, the Facebook CEO had denounced the warnings to be "pretty irresponsible". To that, Elon Musk had called Zuckerberg's understanding of the subject "limited".

While their act of publicly attacking each other's knowledge did stop, though not on a healthy note, it left us worrying about our future with robots taking over us.

While this account was one from the past, in fresh tensions between the U.S. and Russia, Artificial Intelligence is being used as a weapon of choice. An assistant professor at North Dakota State University, Jeremy Straub believes that while US and Russia are decommissioning numerous nuclear weapons, Artificial Intelligence is the newly emerging threat.

He added that tensions are growing between the two nations and hinted towards a cold war with technology at the center. He also stated that any modern cold war today would involve cyber attacks and nuclear powers' involving in conflicts. Artificially intelligent cyber weapons are still considered to be fair games on both sides in the conflict.

Artificial Intelligence gives machines the power of making decisions in split seconds, much faster and accurate than humans. Exploiting this capability for other's defeat would only lead to worsened threats to the countries.

According to Mr. Straub, AI is a technology that will work on the basis of logic alone, and would not be hesitant in certain conditions, which is a characteristic of humans. AI can also be employed to control non-nuclear weapons like unmanned vehicles, drones, and cyber weapons.

Attacks coordinated by artificial intelligence can launch cyber or real-world weapons instantly, making the decision to attack before a human notices the need for it. AI systems can also change their techniques and targets in no time, a trait that is slow with humans in question.

Last year, Vladimir Putin had suggested that Russia could beat the US with a smaller military budget owing to the applications of AI. He had hinted at the creation of an army of the new generation and an army of a new technological paradigm.

Artificial Intelligence could be, or is already being used as a weapon by the US and Russia. China too, recently, announced its plan of developing a £1.5 billion research park solely for the purpose of Artificial Intelligence.

The technology, like all other things, has its flip side. It depends on the (human) decision-makers of today what applications and potential they see in AI. The future of the technology is irrespectively vast and promising.
